Collection Standards

Introduction

The following standards and guidelines apply to all collections to be curated by the Louisiana Division of Archaeology (henceforth referred to as the "Division"). Because the research value of a group of artifacts stems directly from the information contained in their associated records, artifacts and their associated records are conjointly referred to as a "collection" in this document.

These guidelines define the minimum level of documentation and cataloging required for curatorial purposes; they are not proposed to replace or to be used in lieu of any cataloging system developed for specialized analyses. Archaeologists conducting work in Louisiana are encouraged to use more rigorous systems. If the artifacts are to be curated by the Division, however, the cataloging system used must at least meet these minimum standards.
