Flood hazard mitigation is critical to saving structures from future flood damage and assists greatly in reducing structure owner flood insurance as well as future flood damages. We need to have better design elements brought into the process so these historic homes don't look "gangly-stork like" when elevated. I've found most historic homeowners want to do the right thing but are confused and angered by the delays in this process. We need more homeowner education about how important their historic homes are to the community and how important hazard mitigation is. I hope the elevation process and end result doesn't mean the properties are de-listed from the National Register. Financial incentives for future rehabilitation/revitalization are tied to the National Register eligibility of the building and carry fwd with new owners, sort of like an endowment.
