St. Frances Cabrini Church
Comments: To allow one architect and one parishioner of Cabrini to hijack this whole process in order to save a structurally doomed church seems tremendously misguided. No one delights in tearing down a church, but the structure had problems long before Hurricane Katrina hit it. This plan to place Holy Cross High School on the site helps retain the Catholic tradition of that site in a new embodiment, which will serve as an honor for a century or more to come.
As the parent of a Holy Cross student, I sincerely hope that this matter will be quickly resolved. My family was very excited when we found out this would be the new location of Holy Cross and we were devastated when, despite approval of Historic commissions and the Cabrini parish, there was a last minute roadblock put up. If 40 years old is historic, then there is no house or building in New Orleans that can be touched. Such an assertion is patently ridiculous. The city wants us there, the Archdiocese of New Orleans wants us there, the neighbors want us there, and the parishioners want us there. Please let this go forward for the sake of all of these young men and their families. No one should have to continue to go to school in trailers when we could have a permanent home.
