Name: Diane Dumestre Thompson
City: New Orleans, LA
the sexton cottages/maintenance buildings at 4 historic cemeteries: Holt, Lafayette Nos. 1 and 2 and Carrollton No. 1
Comments: I live within walking distance of Lafayette No. 1 where most of my family members have been interred. My sisters and I frequently visit the family tombs
where parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, great aunts, great uncles, and
cousins are buried. We are all life members of Save Our Cemeteries and believe that the sexton cottages in the three cemeteries designated as National Historic Sites should not be demolished. There are many visitors to
the city who tour our cemeteries and often research family connections. In
the past I had considerable assistance from a city employee in the Carrollton
No. l Cemetery who assisted me in obtaining a copy of the title to our family
tomb in Lafayette No.1. Unfortunately the city does not seem to staff the
cemeteries currently for lack of funds, but the public would benefit greatly should the sexton cottages be restored to their primary use.
Please do not destroy those cottages as they are as much a part of the
historic fabric as the tombs and wall vaults and plots of the cemeteries.
