St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Church, 5500 Paris Ave. / Holy Cross School
Comments: TEAR DOWN THE CHURCH! As a Holy Cross alumni, I was heartbroken to discover that Holy Cross would lose the historic 9th Ward campus. Nearly a century and a half of history and tradition has already been removed from the Holy Cross community in the wake of Katrina. In other words, I understand that people who grew up going to the St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Church are hurt by the destruction Katrina has brought to their church and their community. But the fact remains that the Cabrini Church, like the 9th Ward campus of Holy Cross, is no longer capable of serving its purpose as a Church. In the time following Katrina, the Holy Cross community has been forced to recognize that a community is only as strong as the people in it, and as much as the people may love the buildings, the symbols, and the locations they associate with their community, these things are ultimately tools of the community, not the community itself. The people of the St. Frances Xavier Cabrini need to recognize that their future is not tied to destroyed buildings, just as Holy Cross has done. Tear down the church; to do otherwise is to prevent both communities from moving forward.
