Lt. Governor Dardenne hosts golf tournament benefitting Poverty Point

Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne and several Louisiana legislators co-chaired the inaugural Poverty Point Golf Scramble June 19 at Black Bear Golf Club in Delhi. The four-person scramble raised about $12,000 for the Advocates For Poverty Point, a nonprofit that will support improvement and maintenance projects at the Poverty Point State Historic Site. The site is the United States' only 2013 UNESCO World Heritage Site nomination, a designation expected to be inscribed next summer.

Canada   Partnership opportunity in Canada August 2013
Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne is traveling to Canada for Louisiana Day at Les Fetes de la Nouvelle-France in Quebec City on Aug. 9. On the way to Quebec City, the lieutenant governor will travel to Toronto and Montreal to host three functions for media, tour operators and travel agents.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 7, Toronto: Lt. Governor Dardenne will host two tourism functions, a luncheon for media and tour operator invitees and an after-work function for select travel agents.
  • Thursday, Aug. 8, Montreal: Lt. Governor Dardenne will host a small luncheon for media and tour operators.
  • Friday, Aug. 9, Quebec City: Lt. Governor Dardenne is participating in Louisiana Day activities at Les Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France. www.NouvelleFrance.qc.ca

National Geographic's geotourism initiative   Nominations being accepted for National Geographic's geotourism initiative
Nominations are being accepted for tourism points of interest in Louisiana and three other Gulf Coast states for a special National Geographic Maps project that includes a website, mobile app and printed Geotourism MapGuilde. The U.S. Gulf Coast States Geotourism map and website will highlight sites and attractions that are unique-local restaurants, wildlife and scenic trails, bed and breakfasts, historic attractions, fishing destinations, museums and art galleries. The website and printed MapGuide will present a variety of growing travel niches, including adventure, nature, cultural heritage and agro-tourism. The finished website, mobile app and printed MapGuide will be available to the public in December. Nominations will be accepted through July 15. Click here for the complete PDF packet. A Montreal motorcycle group toured Louisiana with a list of key things to see and do thanks to counselors at two Louisiana Welcome Centers. The Honda Goldwing Motorcycle Club, 54 riders on 27 bikes, stopped at the Kentwood and French Quarter centers en route to an overnight provider in New Orleans' Lower Garden District. French speaking counselors Lucien Eyraud and Manuel Grau-Diez provided information on notable attractions and restaurants.

Louisiana delegates made a big splash earlier this month at the TAP Dance 2013 in Norfolk, Va., by hosting more than 50 tour operators on a nighttime cruise on the American Rover Tall Ship. Louisiana delegates greeted the TAP partners in festive pirate attire. All the TAP partners were given framed pictures of their Louisiana pirate cruise, and the TAP partners proudly displayed their frames in their meeting suites throughout the week.
 


New Orleans   New Orleans tops TripAdvisor's list of most affordable cities for summer travel
WVUE – Affordability is the key with a TripAdvisor.com survey, naming New Orleans as the sixth least expensive city to visit in the U.S. The survey analyzed the costs of a one night stay in a four-star hotel, a two-course dinner with a bottle of wine and cocktails and two-mile round-trip taxi transportation for two, giving the city a total of $348.66 a day.

Margaritaville Resort Casino in Bossier City celebrated its grand opening on June 15 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Mayor Lorenz Walker and State Rep. Roy Burrell expressed enthusiasm for the economic and employment potential of the new establishment. The $197 million casino and hotel is projected to provide more than 1,200 jobs and more than $12 million in local tax revenues.

Louisiana Travel Promotion Association and Miles Marketing Destinations selected Kelli West, marketing manager for the Alexandria Pineville Area CVB, to receive their scholarship to the 2013 STS Marketing College at the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega, Ga., Aug. 4 - 9. The STS Marketing College is a three-year educational program for members of the tourism industry in the Southeast U.S. A broad-based curriculum of courses designed to teach marketing techniques from all facets of the tourism industry is offered. Students who attend all three years of Marketing College receive a Travel Marketing Professional certification.

Shifting international tourism markets   Top 20 countries fueling U.S. tourism: Asia and Latin America on the rise, Europe in decline
Skift - Data recently released by the U.S. Department of Commerce details America's top inbound tourism markets from 2012. Total visitor numbers increased 7 percent to a record 67 million international visitors. Canada and Mexico led arrivals, which brought in 22.7 million and 14.5 million travelers, respectively. The number of Asian and Latin Americans quickly increased in 2012, while Europeans visiting the U.S. continued to drop.
 


Record number of inbound visitors predicted   U.S. predicts record inbound visitors, as global travel soars
Travel Market Report - Inbound visitor totals to the U.S. are forecast to rise 4 percent in 2013, surpassing last year's record-breaking numbers, according to the U.S Dept. of Commerce. About 69.6 million international visitors are expected to stay one or more nights in the U.S. this year. That growth rate, predicted in the Office of Travel and Tourism Industries' 2013 Spring Forecast, will be fairly consistent through 2018, when visitors are expected to number 84.6 million-an increase of 26 percent compared to 2012.
 


Department of Commerce   U.S. Dept. of Commerce announces creation of National Travel and Tourism Office
Starting this October, the U.S. Dept. of Commerce will redraw its organization chart to elevate the role of travel and tourism. U.S. Travel Association was briefed on the plan for a new, consolidated National Travel and Tourism Office, with a political appointee serving as executive director and reporting directly to the new assistant secretary of industry and analysis within the International Trade Administration. This will create a "one-stop commerce shop" and boost efforts to implement the country's national travel and tourism strategy.

Travel Daily Media - Travel search website Skyscanner revealed that almost three quarters of women said they do most of the research when it comes to planning a trip, with just 9 percent claiming their partners do it. Of the men who admitted their partners did the research, a third admitted their partners was better at it and could find better deals, while 10 percent said they were simply too lazy. About 20 percent of male respondents said they believe their partners enjoy doing the research more than they do, and a similar proportion thinks their partners are fussier. This was backed up by the fact that less than a quarter of female respondents said they would be happy to let their partner make all the travel decisions. But men are apparently happy with this arrangement; 97 percent of male respondents said they were content with the status quo, while 95 percent of women agreed.
