LT. GOVERNOR LANDRIEU ANNOUNCES $85K IN GRANT AWARDS TO LOUISIANA'S CULTURAL COMMUNITY
Baton Rouge, LA - Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landreiu announced the first grant awards of the Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation, approximately $85,000 to be given to 15 artists, cultural businesses, and arts organizations. The mission of the Cultural Economy Foundation is to support the development and enhancement of the unique cultural industries of Louisiana. Reacting to the tremendous need of those in the cultural community following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the CE Foundation began accepting donations for immediate and ongoing aid to people and organizations that make up Louisiana's cultural industries.
The recipients of the first Cultural Economy Foundation Grants are:
Javier Juarez, Dance
Lieutenant Governor Landrieu said "Through the Cultural Economy Foundation, artists, artisans, chefs, musicians and others in the cultural industries are receiving much needed financial support to rebuild their careers and their lives. The cultural economy involves infrastructure, preservation, business and commerce, but it also retains and sustains one or our greatest assets, our people. We will continue to provide the resources they need to help them build back better than before."
Angele Davis, Secretary of the Department of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism, congratulated the first round of recipients and applauded the work of the Foundation and the volunteer panelists who review the applications. "We are grateful for the work done to raise the level of awareness about the desperate circumstances of so many of our cultural entities, and the generosity of foundations and donors who have contributed funds to support the grants program of the Cultural Economy Foundation."
Jennifer Eplett Reilly, President of the Board of Directors of the Foundation, stated that donations to the Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation are utilized in accordance with the initiatives outlined in the Louisiana Rebirth: Restoring the Soul of America strategic plan. "The Foundation is guided by the belief that the recovery and rebirth of our communities is dependent on the revival of Louisiana's creative, cultural base of workers and work products. Through our grants program we are contributing directly to the source so that our cultural base can re-establish itself, grow and thrive."
