LT. GOVERNOR LANDRIEU AND THE DIVISION OF THE ARTS ANNOUNCE THE 2006 GOVERNOR'S ARTS AWARDS
NOMINATIONS DUE BY 5:00pm Wednesday September 6, 2006
BATON ROUGE, LA. - Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu and the Louisiana Division of the Arts, in the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, are now accepting nominations for the 2006 Governor's Arts Awards. The annual Arts Awards recognize Louisiana's artists, arts educators, businesses, and arts organizations. Winners are chosen on the basis of the significance and magnitude of their contributions, the benefits of those contributions to Louisiana's citizens, and innovation and commitment to the arts in Louisiana.
"At the Governor's Arts Awards, we honor those that have improved the lives of Louisianans through their contributions to what we call the Cultural Economy. Arts and culture not only have intrinsic value, but in Louisiana culture means business, accounting for 144,000 jobs," Lt. Governor Landrieu said. " I encourage people to nominate those in their communities that have made contributions to our state through the arts."
Nominations will be accepted in eleven categories: Arts Education (Organization); Arts Education (Individual); Arts Organization (Small); Arts Organization (Large); Business/Corporate Support (Small); Business/Corporate Support (Large); Folk Artist; Lifetime Achievement; Patron; Professional Artist; and Leadership in the Arts. Two Special Recognition Awards will also be presented. The Cultural Economy Development Award will recognize individuals and businesses for their work toward the development of the arts and cultural sectors in Louisiana's economy and the Louisiana Rebirth Award in recognition of contributions and aid extended to rebuild Louisiana's cultural economy immediately following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Winners will be selected by the Louisiana State Arts Council, a governor-appointed advisory council to the Division of the Arts, and by members of the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Office of the Lt. Governor.
