Lt. Governor, Federal Coordinator, National Service CEO To Announce Summer Aid for New Orleans Youth
New Orleans, LA--Federal officials will announce a summer AmeriCorps program to serve thousands of New Orleans youth, at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 17 at the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel.
Because summer programs for the children and youth of New Orleans have not been fully restored following Hurricane Katrina, federal, state and city officials are concerned about the lack of constructive options for youth during the summer months. The VISTA Summer of Service New Orleans 2007 will address that concern.
The Office of the Federal Coordinator for Gulf Coast Rebuilding coordinates the Federal rebuilding efforts by working with state and local officials to focus on a set of prioritized, integrated and long-term initiatives to rebuild the region.
AmeriCorps is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, which also oversees Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America. The Corporation's mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. For more information, visit http://www.nationalservice.gov.
