Construction Progress at Palmetto Island State Park

Palmetto Island State Park

Located off La. 82 on the Vermilion River between Abbeville and Intracoastal City, Palmetto Island State Park will be a full-fledged 1299-acre facility. Amenities at the site will include 6 two-bedroom cabins, campsites, 4 picnic pavilions and picnic sites, a water playground and floating pier.
Phases 1 and 2 -- foundation, road grading, infrastructure and utilities -- of the three-step construction process have been completed. Construction on Phase 3 (buildings and amenities) has begun, and should be complete by late 2009. This fiscal year's budget does not allow for the operation of Palmetto Island State Park, and anticipated to open during the 2010-2011 fiscal year.

July 2004 -- Limestone is laid to prepare the roads and camping spurs at Palmetto Island State Park.
