Louisiana Division of the Arts believes the comprehensive, sequential study of one or more artistic disciplines is essential to a complete and well-rounded education. We also believe a life that includes participation and engagement in arts and culture is one of vibrancy. Our work centers on these beliefs and we are committed to the research, development, and implementation of programs and services that provide the Arts for all citizens, regardless of age, race, or circumstance.
Participation in Poetry Out Loud (POL) helps students master public speaking skills, build self- confidence, and learn about their literary heritage. The program increases student engagement in literature classes, provides non-academic scholarship opportunities for students, and builds statewide cultural connections for schools.
In addition to being FREE, POL is easily implemented by a school, cultural institution such as a library or community theatre, or individual teacher or artist. We are looking for new and returning students to participate for the 2023-2024 school year.
GENERAL PROGRAM DETAILS
All students in grades 9-12. This includes students of public, private, charter, and homeschools
Students memorize and recite poetry from anthology found at www.poetryoutloud.org. Each student is scored based on performance and accuracy criteria.
Participants advance from school/local level competitions to regional competitions. School/Local competitions should be conducted by mid-December, 2023.
Each region advances their winner and 1st runner-up to the state finals competition. Regional competitions should be conducted by mid-February 2024.
The state finals competition is scheduled for Thursday, March 7, 2024 6pm and the Delta Grand Theatre in Opelousas.
The winner of the state finals will represent Louisiana at the national competition in Washington, D.C. April 30-May 2, 2024.
